Work main cause of stress for a third

One out of three people say that work is the biggest cause of stress in their life, according to a new survey.

Research from mental health charity Mind shows that pressure at work causes working adults more stress than debt, illness or family life.

While 34 per cent of adults rank their job as "very" or "quite" stressful, only 30 per cent feel the same about their finances, and 17 per cent about their health.

Stress at work was also found to have a detrimental effect on mental health.

Nearly half - 45 per cent - of the 2,000 adults surveyed had found it difficult to sleep because of pressures faced in their job.

And 18 per cent had suffered anxiety as a result of workplace stress.

Meanwhile, 15 per cent of respondents had developed depression, with a further 11 per cent experiencing panic attacks.

Chief executive of Mind, Paul Farmer, said: "Our research shows that employees are still experiencing high levels of stress at work, which is negatively impacting on their physical and mental health."

Research also revealed that workers are turning to alcohol in order to cope with workplace stress.

More than half of people - 57 per cent - said they have an alcoholic drink after work to wind down, while 14 per cent admitted to drinking during the working day to deal with pressure.

In London, 28 per cent of respondents said they had drunk alcohol during the working day, which is double the UK average.

Farmer added: "Work-related mental health problems are an issue too important for businesses to ignore."

According to the survey, 19 per cent of workers have had to take time off from their job because they were suffering from stress.

Doctors recommend talking therapy to help people overcome stress, anxiety or depression.
