TOKYO — Mitsubishi will launch a new, Renault-based midsize sedan in the U.S. under a new strategic deal announced on Tuesday. Mitsubishi has not offered a midsize sedan in the U.S. market since its Galant was discontinued after the 2012 model year.
Specific details about the car, including its name, launch timing and price, were released. The car will be the first of two Renault-based sedans sold by Mitsubishi, but the companies did not say which Renault model would be used as the base for either vehicle.
The companies also announced their plan to "explore several new projects covering products, technologies and manufacturing capacity among the automakers."
The new Mitsubishi midsize sedan will compete in a crowded and competitive U.S. family-sedan segment that includes the Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima. It will be built at the Renault-Samsung plant in Busan, South Korea.
The second sedan will compete in the global C segment. The manufacturing location for this car was not disclosed. It is not clear if the second sedan will be sold in the U.S.
Mitsubishi and Renault-Nissan also will jointly develop an electric car and a new compact car.
The two said the electric car will be spun off a jointly developed "Kei-car platform of the type popular in the Japanese domestic market."
Edmunds says: Renault departed the U.S. in 1987, so this intriguing deal should give U.S. consumers an unusual choice in the midsize segment.
