Windows XP Automatically Logs Off After Login

Windows XP Automatically Logging Off After Login

A malware infected registry can cause this harmless but annoying problem where Windows immediately logs off straight after logging on.

I’ve heard of guys reinstalling their entire systems because of this auto logoff issue.  Bizarre stuff.

If Windows XP automatically logs you off after login you can try these two step by step solutions.

The solutions are similar but one is executed locally and the other remotely over the network.

There’s also a third possible solution which is to edit the registry via command prompt which can be very tricky.

If you’re really stuck, leave a comment.

Boot up Windows XP into Command Prompt (If you don’t how to get into Safe Mode, see this article).
Note:  If you can’t get into Safe Mode you can try this from another Windows computer on your network.  See below for more. When at the desktop, click Start > RunType regedit and click OKIn regedit, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinlogonIn the right pane, double click on ShellEnter the following: explorer.exeClick OKIn the right pane again, double click UserInitEnter the following (assuming your hard disk is c:): c:\windows\system32\userinit.exeClick OKExit RegeditRestart your computer and try logging in

SATA Windows XP Driver Finding Service

Anyone who is trying to create or ‘slipstream’ their Windows XP CD (as described here) and needs the SATA (Hard Disk) controller drivers to put onto the CD/DVD using a program such as nLite and simply cannot find the drivers for their system.

Simple really – After you submit your details using the form below, Rosco will locate your SATA driver and send you a direct download link within 48 hours – usually much quicker though!

$5 (limited time only…get it while it’s hot!)

If the driver can’t be found or doesn’t exist, you will get a refund – no questions asked.

Securely send Rosco $5 via PayPal or AlertPay.Complete & Submit the short form below.Your SATA driver package will be sent to you as a download link. This is not a CD creation assistance, private tech support service.  After you’re sent the driver download link – my work is done (I might consider a CD creation assistance service in the future…make me an offer I can’t refuse!).The driver will be from official sources (motherboard/chipset manufacturers, PC manufacturers, etc) and will be tested and verified to be VIRUS FREE before being sent to you. Your email address is safe – not shared, poked or prodded.Happy New Year (it might be June by the time you’re reading this).

Find WiFi Network Passwords Stored In Windows

When Windows XP or Vista connects to a wireless network it stores the WEP or WPA password in an encrypted form so that it can reconnect to that same network in the future without you having to enter your password again.

This means however that when you want to connect another PC, Mac, smartphone or other wireless device to the same network that you need to remember that password which is often long and not very memorable!

To find these passwords, I use a little piece of free software called WirelessKeyView (by NirSoft) which you can download at the bottom of this article.

WirelessKeyView displays all of the WEP or WPA keys stored on your Windows PC in a simple interface as shown and from here they can be copied to the clipboard or saved to a text file.

Wirelesskeyview Interface - Recover WPA WEP Passwords

For WirelessKeyView to work you need to be using either Windows XPWindows Vista or Windows 7 (advanced option required), be using Windows built in Wireless configuration known as ‘Wireless Zero Configuration’ and not third party wireless connection software sometimes used by computer and wireless card manufacturers.

There are two possible downloads - 32 bit and 64 bit.

Windows XP 64 Bit Version

To find out which version of Windows you have, right click My Computer > click Properties and view the General page and look for x64 as shown here.  If you have x64, download the 64 bit version and if not then well it’s 32 bit.

This super little utility is brought to you by NirSoft.

Stop Windows Rebooting Automatically After Updates

Windows Installed New Updates Baloon

In fact, it’s more than annoying.

Sometimes it’s downright infuriating – especially if you’ve been working on something in the evening, you get up from your computer and walk away without saving it and then come back in the morning to find the ‘Windows installed new updates‘ message happily grinning at you.

By default, Windows is set to install Windows Updates at about 3am and to automatically restart your computer when it’s finished.

It doesn’t really matter if you have 20 programs open or unsaved documents;  Windows simply restarts your computer – forcibly.

Here’s a few ways to prevent that from ever happening again:

Click Start > RunType gpedit.msc and click OK.Expand Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows UpdateDouble-click either “No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates installations” or “No auto-restart with logged in users for scheduled automatic updates installations” (depending on your Windows version)Select the Enabled radio button and click OKRestart Windows. :) Click Start > RunType regedit and click OK.Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\Policies \Microsoft\Windows \WindowsUpdate\AU Change the “NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers” DWord value to 0 (zero)Restart Windows. :)

Windows 7 Boot Error: ‘some file’ is compressed. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart

Note: This article relates to Windows 7 only. If you are using Windows XP please see the article: NTLDR is compressed. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart

Windows 7 Logo filename is compressed windows 7 error

After switching on your computer or after restarting Windows 7 you receive the error ‘filename’ is compressed. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart on a black screen with white writing when trying to boot into Windows.

The ‘filename’ is different on different systems but the following have been reported:

BootMgr is compressed.  Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart.QXHDK is compressed.  Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart.NTLDR is compressed.  Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart.DFJEU is compressed.  Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart.VUFEI is compressed.  Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart.DGKAR is compressed.  Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart.

A bug in Windows 7 file compression is causing this problem.  We can solve the problem by decompressing the hard disk as shown below.

1.   Boot to the Windows System Recovery Options screen.  If you don’t know how to do that the see this article: Windows 7 or Vista System Recovery Options
2.   On the System Recovery Options screen click LOAD DRIVERS button.

Windows 7 System Recovery Options Screen Load Drivers

3.   On the left, click Computer.  You should now see your Local Disk C: on the right.
4.   Right click Local Disk C: and click Properties.
5.   At the bottom of the properties box, deselect the box that says Compress this drive to save space.
6.   Another window will pop up asking you to confirm the attribute change. (the windows might get a bit messy so you’ll just have to move them around the screen so you can see them properly)
7.   Select Apply changes to drive C:, subfolder and files and click OK
8.   Now I would suggest waiting.  You will not see a progress dialog as it uncompresses the drive so give it a few minutes until your hard disk stops showing activity.
9.   When finished, cancel all remaining dialog boxes and restart the computer.
