United and Continental Airlines to hand out 11,000 iPads to its pilots by Kelly Hodgkins

Kelly HodgkinsAug 23rd 2011 at 1:30PM

United and Continental Airlines are throwing out their paper flight manuals and navigational charts and embracing the iPad. About 11,000 iPads will be given to all United and Continental pilots starting this month. The airline expects the iPad will replace 38 pounds of documentation per pilot and 16 million pieces of paper each year.

This move to electronic documentation on the iPad is a growing trend in the airline industry. Just this year, Alaska Airlines gave iPads to their pilots and Delta Airlines is testing a similar program for its pilots. British Airways also adopted iPads for its cabin crew to help with customer service.

Next Spring, pilots from different airlines will be comparing notes on who has the iPad, who has the iPad 2, and who got the 'sweet new' iPad 3.

No, they won't have to turn them off for take off and landing. That requirement is just for passengers.

Here's hoping that they charge them fully before takeoff or that they are provided with an in cockpit charging cable that is more robust than the one Apple includes with it.

So will they have to turn them off during takeoff and landing?

TIP OF THE DAYMORE TIPS
Don't want to cough up $69.99 for a Lion USB stick? Make your own recovery drive instead. It won't contain a full Lion install, but it can save you if your hard drive goes south. Download a copy of the Lion Recovery Assistant and use it to build a recovery drive from your current Lion install. The assistant works with any thumb drive with at least 1GB of free space. Make sure to use a Sharpie to label the drive so it will be easily identifiable!
