Facebook has long had rules in place which required that all contests which are run on the social network must go through apps.  While many people ignored the rule, and placed simple contests right on their news feeds, this was technically against the ToS, and occasionally resulted in them getting shut down.  In a recent announcement, however, Facebook has reversed that rule and now permits these types of contests to be run directly on an individual or business page.
Some examples of contests which are now able to run directly on the page would be those which offer some sort of prize based on the number of likes a post gets.  Drawings where everyone who likes a page or post gets entered for a prize are also acceptable.  Another common contest would be where the page collects entries by having users post on the page or directly on a post from the individual or page owner. For the most part, any contest which can be run through a Facebook app, can now be run directly on the page.  Of course, with an app there is far more flexibility and functionality, which simply isn’t available on a page.
Based on the fact that in order to run a high-quality contest with secure entries, marketers will still need to use apps, this doesn’t seem like it will have a major impact on what the average user sees when using Facebook.  Those who were already posting contests directly on their page will no longer have to fear getting the contest removed.  Some marketers who did not have the resources to create a contest app, but didn’t want to break the ToS may decide to start running contests as well.
Overall, this move by Facebook seems like a much smarter choice compared with attempting to moderate the tens of thousands of informal contests which were being posted directly on pages.
Have you run contests on pages before?  If not, will you start now that it is permitted by the ToS?
