Chevrolet Silverado Cheyenne Concept PictureSilverado Cheyenne Concept comes to SEMA with a 420-hp 6.2-liter V8 and 200 pounds lighter thanks to a bunch of carbon fiber. | November 01, 2013 | General Motors Corporation View Full Screen 1 Photo Just the Facts:The hunkered-down and lightened-up Chevrolet Cheyenne concept was unveiled today at the 2013 SEMA show in Las Vegas.Chevy's concept pickup is based on the regular-cab 2014 Silverado and features extensive use of carbon fiber for major exterior components. The Cheyenne concept is powered by a 6.2-liter version of GM's direct-injection small-block V8 developing 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.LAS VEGAS — Chevrolet unveiled the Cheyenne, a hunkered-down, lightened-up concept of its all-new 2014 Silverado pickup truck, at the SEMA show here today. The Cheyenne recalls some of GM's muscle-pickups of yore, but injects a dose of new-age sensibilities in its focus on lightweight materials.
Based on the Silverado regular cab — intrinsically the lightest configuration of the Silverado's three available body styles — the Cheyenne concept is fitted with carbon-fiber bumpers, tailgate and cargo box inner panels, as well as an aluminum driveshaft.
In all, a Chevy engineer told Edmunds, the Cheyenne concept shaved about 200 pounds from the production pickup's curb weight. Doesn't sound like much, perhaps, but it's enough, along with the 420-horsepower 6.2-liter small-block V8 breathing through a Borla exhaust, to shove the Cheyenne from zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. The 6.2-liter small-block endows the Cheyenne with an extra 65 hp and 77 pound-feet more than a production regular-cab Silverado, as the medium-sized variant (remember, there's a 7.0-liter job) of the small block currently isn't available for that body style.
The Cheyenne chassis mods include a lowered ride height, rear stabilizer bar and Brembo-developed carbon-ceramic brake discs snatched from Chevy's nasty new 2014 Camaro Z/28, which also was the donor for the Cheyenne's charcoal-colored 19-inch alloy wheels.
Those who've ogled the Camaro Z/28 also will recognize it as the donor for the Silverado Cheyenne concept's bucket seats, steering wheel and other interior pieces, too, though not the Z/28's Tremec six-speed manual transmission.
Edmunds says: With Ford's F-150 Raptor out there, Chevy probably figures it's already time to get serious about a performance version of its new-generation pickups.
