PALO ALTO, California — Tesla on Wednesday announced the opening of its West Coast Supercharger Corridor, a network of stations that enable Tesla Model S owners to travel for free from San Diego to Vancouver.

Tesla said the setup means that more than 99 percent of Californians and 87 percent of Oregon and Washington owners are now within 200 miles of a Supercharger.

The Tesla Superchargers are located near amenities like rest areas and shopping centers. Model S owners can charge their electric car at the stations. Tesla said the Superchargers provide half a charge in as little as 20 minutes.

"East Coast Supercharger network should be complete in a few months," tweeted Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

In a separate announcement, Tesla said Panasonic will supply nearly 2 billion battery cells to the automaker over the next four years for the Model S sedan and the upcoming Model X SUV. Two years ago, the two companies made a deal under which Panasonic would supply Tesla with enough batteries to build 80,000 cars over four years.

It was widely speculated that this latest deal between the two will result in a major boost in Tesla's automotive production.

When asked about production plans by Edmunds, Liz Jarvis-Shean, a Tesla spokeswoman, declined comment.

Edmunds says: Tesla Superchargers may be as ubiquitous as McDonald's on American highways in the future.
