TOKYO — Toyota will showcase several futuristic models at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Show, including a hydrogen fuel-cell sedan concept and another take on the FT-86 Open concept, a convertible version of the current Scion FR-S.

Toyota also will debut the JPN Taxi Concept, which looks ready to compete with the Nissan NV200 Taxi of Tomorrow.

Another concept set for a global debut is the Toyota FV2 or "Fun Vehicle 2," a one-passenger pod car.

The FT-86 Open concept holds great interest for U.S. consumers, although Toyota did not disclose any production plans for the car. It gets a new "Flash Red" exterior color. This is the second time Toyota has displayed a convertible version of the FR-S at a major auto show. A white version of the car took center stage at the 2013 Geneva Auto Show.

Once again, Toyota said the concept was "created to explore future sports car variations." The red version looks nearly production-ready.

Toyota said the concept version of its fuel-cell vehicle is slated for launch "around 2015." It has a driving range of approximately 311 miles and a refueling time as quick as three minutes. The exterior is inspired by the shape of a wave, a nod to the car's water-vapor emissions. The four-passenger concept rides on a new, dedicated fuel-cell platform and has two high-pressure hydrogen tanks.

The Toyota FV2 also will make its world debut at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Show. Rather than using a steering wheel, the driver operates the Toyota FV2 by tilting the body, Segway-fashion. Toyota compares the driving experience to riding a horse. The vehicle also uses voice- and image recognition to determine the driver's mood.

The Toyota JPN Taxi Concept looks similar to a black London cab. The Toyota cab concept is equipped with a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)-fueled hybrid system.

The Voxy Concept and Noah Concept are next-generation minivans that are scheduled for launch in Japan in early 2014.

The Toyota Aqua G Sports is a compact hybrid sports car that has been customized by GAZOO Racing. A production version will launch in Japan in late November.

The Toyota i-Road will make an appearance at the Tokyo show. Toyota said the i-Road will undergo verification testing in Japan next year.

Edmunds says: Toyota trots out a red version of the FT-86 Open convertible and continues to experiment with a hydrogen fuel-cell car. Those are the two big takeaways from the Tokyo Auto Show.
