TORRANCE, California — The 2014 Acura MDX and RDX received the top five-star scores in crash testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Both Acuras received five-star scores for each of the frontal and side impact crash tests and scored four stars for rollover resistance.

The MDX and RDX have not yet been rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The redesigned 2014 MDX offers optional lane departure warning, forward collision warning, collision mitigation braking and blind spot information.

The 2014 Buick Enclave, one of the MDX's chief domestic rivals, earned an identical safety rating from NHTSA. Two other MDX competitors, the 2014 BMW X5 and the 2014 Volvo XC90 have not been rated by NHTSA.

The 2014 Cadillac SRX, one of the RDX's chief competitors, earned a five-star overall rating from NHTSA. The SRX received four stars in the frontal crash test, five stars in the side impact crash test and four stars in the rollover crash test.

Two other RDX competitors, the 2014 Audi Q5 and the 2014 BMW X3 have not been rated by NHTSA.

Cash for crash scammers exposed

A group of 60 fraudsters have been involved in a major scam to make money out of faking car crashes.

The offenders have either pleaded guilty or been convicted by jurors of their part in the criminal activities. The fraud was mainly centred on Derwentside in County Durham and the number of fake claims of crashes in the area led to residents being charged up to £100 more for their car insurance.

Police were looking into the actions of members of the Wright family, who live in Burnhope, when they discovered the extent of the scam. The Wrights hit the headlines four years ago when police renamed two streets which the notorious family had named after themselves.

Officers launched Operation Nacho to look into the family's activity, fearing they were behind organised crime in the Burnhope area. Working with the Insurance Fraud Bureau as well as other agencies, the police studied insurance claims relating to 1,800 accidents and picked out 261 which they believed could potentially be false.

Those working on the investigation believed the claims could either be completely made up, majorly exaggerated or staged to try and make money from insurance firms.

A total of 25 crashes were selected to be looked into in more detail as they were highly suspicious and had seen claimants receive more than £514,000 in pay-outs. And the scam is believed to have involved more than £3 million of false claims in all.

In 2012 a total of 70 people charged with being involved in the 'cash for crash' scam were taken to Newcastle Crown Court for a series of trials. And 60 of them either admitted their involvement or were convicted after a trial.

The group included seven members of the Wright family. Up until now reporting restrictions had prevented the court cases from being covered by the media but the order was lifted by Judge Roger Thorn allowing the full scale of the criminal activities to be revealed.

One of the principal members of the gang was Jonathon Wright, known as Jonty, who had a business recovering, hiring and storing vehicles known as PJ Autos. The 40-year-old is still waiting to be sentenced for making false insurance claims of up to £200 a day for storing damaged cars and hiring out replacements.

His elder brother Alan Wright, 49, who was considered to be the head of the family was convicted after a trial last year and sentenced to four years in prison. He was found guilty of lying about being involved in four fake crashes over a 10-month period. 

And another Wright family member staged a car crash in Burnhope using an Audi, claiming the car was written off by the accident. The vehicle had been bought with a mileage of 112,000 but the insurance company was told it had just 37,000 miles on the clock so they would pay more for the vehicle. The claimant also pretended to suffer from whiplash as a result of the accident.

Officers working on the investigation drafted in a forensic engineer to help them who was able to prove a crash reported between a lorry and a car in Burnhope could not actually have happened.

(CNN) -- Thousands of mourners will bid farewell Wednesday to Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera, whose soulful ballads sold out concert halls and made her a household name.

The memorial service will be held at Los Angeles' Gibson amphitheater that holds 6,100 people.

Rivera's plane crashed in a remote, mountainous area in northern Mexico on December 9.

It killed all six aboard, including her publicist, lawyer and makeup artists.

Rivera's death left fans devastated.

She was reportedly on the verge of a crossover with a sitcom inspired by the success of "I Love Jenni," a Spanish-language reality TV show on Telemundo's mun2 network.

Sen. Marco Rubio described her as an American success story.

"She was a singer in a genre of music that's largely dominated by males, and she brought a powerful voice to that genre where she sung frankly about her struggles to give her children a better life in this country," the Florida Republican senator said.

Rivera sold 15 million records, according to Billboard, and recently won two Billboard Music Awards, including favorite Mexican music female artist.

But she started out small.

Humble beginnings

In 2010, Rivera spoke about how she once sold cans for scrap metal and hawked music records at her family's stand at a Los Angeles flea market.

"It is very flattering when they tell me that I'm a great artist, a great entertainer, that when I'm on stage I can get in the recording studio and come up with a great production," she told CNN en Espa?ol. "But before all of that, I was a businesswoman. I'm primarily business-minded."

Rivera eventually became the owner of several companies, including Jenni Rivera Enterprises, which produced and marketed her music, a fragrance brand, a jeans factory and a television production company.

She was nominated for Latin Grammy Awards in 2002, 2008 and 2011. In October, People en Espa?ol named her to its list of the 25 most powerful women.

Born in Long Beach, California, to Mexican immigrant parents, Rivera released her debut album in 1999, according to her website.

She followed that up with two more albums, including the 2003 album "Farewell to Selena" -- a tribute to slain Tejano star Selena Quintanilla -- that increased her popularity.

Tumultuous personal life

Famous for her music, she is also known for her tumultuous personal life. The singer was a single mom at the age of 15 and is the mother of five, her website said.

In 2009, she made headlines when she was detained at the Mexico City airport with tens of thousands of dollars in cash.

A year later, she made headlines again with the marriage to former baseball pitcher Esteban Loaiza, who played for the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers. They later divorced. It was her third marriage.

"Staying defeated, crying and suffering was not an option," she said. "I had to get off my feet, dust myself off and press on. That's what I want to teach my daughters."

Her over-the-top lifestyle was chronicled in "I Love Jenni" on Telemundo. The show began airing on mun2 last year, and featured her life on the road, balancing the duties of motherhood and stardom as she toured Mexico and the United States.

Rivera performed at a concert in Monterrey on December 8 before boarding the Learjet early the next day. It lost contact with air traffic controllers about 60 miles into the trip.

Plane company investigation

The small Learjet plane was 43-years-old, the state-run Notimex news agency reported, citing the Mexican director of civil aviation.

The Drug Enforcement Administration is investigating the company that owned the plane.

Court records revealed that the aviation company, Starwood Management, had two planes seized this year. The DEA declined to give further details, citing an ongoing investigation.

But it confirmed that the company was in a dispute with insurance firms over accusations of of falsehoods. Starwood and its representatives have not responded to repeated CNN requests for comments.

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said it is helping with the investigation.

U.S. records show the airplane was substantially damaged in 2005 when it struck a runway marker near Amarillo, Texas. At the time, the plane's pilot reported losing the ability to steer.
