In the month of October, our long-term 2014 Chevrolet Silverado spun an additional 2,137 miles onto its odometer and consumed 124.5 gallons of 87-octane fuel. That equates to 17.2 miles per gallon for the month, which is just a hair less than its lifetime average of 17.3 mpg.

These results so far are less than the truck's EPA combined rating of 19 mpg.

We drove our long-term 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV 1,805 miles since last fill-up at the end of September. Its lifetime average has increased to 20 mpg or 0.2 mpg better than we achieved in October.

Our best and worst thoughts 25.0 mpg and 15.1 mpg unchanged in October, as did our best selection of 424 km.

Fuel economy update for October-2014 Kia Forte EX long-term Road Test

We took our 2014 Kia Forte in the latter part of June, so we have to pour fuel in this fine driving Korean compact sedan for a little more than 4 months. During that time we have run the 7,963 miles, which works out to a little more than 1 850 miles per month.

Those numbers put us ahead of schedule in our quest to collect 20,000 miles in one year. From this point forward we just need average 1.563 miles per month to reach our goal. Forte seems popular enough around the Office to handle that easily.

What's more, we are pleased with the MPG numbers we've seen. Our 2014 Kia Forte EX 2.0-liter engine and has a six-speed automatic, which is good for an official EPA rating of 28 mpg combined (24 city/36 highway.) To this point, our 8,000 miles averaging 17.3 mpg, which rounds to 28 mpg.

Nailed.

Our best Highway tank has so far 35.0 mpg, and that came on our overall evaluation loop, a mix of city and highway driving, which is far from boring freeway stint on cruise control. We can beat the 36 mpg Highway numbers, is what I say, and we have nearly 8 months to make it happen.

Update on the Kaitlynn Fisher Case

For the past week, Progressive has been in active settlement discussions with the family of Kaitlynn Fisher. Though there was considerable public interest in this case and we know many of you saw mentions of it on social media and news outlets, we also believed it was inappropriate to share further details while those discussions were ongoing. As of this morning, an agreement has been reached with the Fisher family to settle the claim. Prior to that, we were cautious with our responses, but now that the agreement has been reached, we’d like to further clarify Progressive’s role in the trial.

Ms. Fisher held a policy with Progressive that included Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage, which protects drivers in the event they’re struck by an at-fault driver who’s either uninsured or doesn’t have enough coverage.

Under Maryland law, in order to receive the benefits of an underinsured driver claim, the other driver must be at fault. Sometimes this can be proven without the need for a trial, but in Ms. Fisher’s case, there were credible conflicting eyewitness accounts as to who was at fault.

A trial was necessary so that a jury could review all of the evidence and come to a decision. In those circumstances, under Maryland law, the insurance company providing the Underinsured Motorist coverage is considered a defendant. As a defendant in this case, Progressive participated in the trial procedures on our own behalf while Nationwide represented the other driver.

On Thursday, August 9, a jury determined that the other driver was at fault in the accident involving Ms. Fisher. In accordance with that decision, Progressive worked with the Fisher family and their legal representative to resolve the claim.

This was a tragic accident and our sympathies go out to the Fisher family.

NEW YORK, July 1 (Reuters)-German industrial gases producer Linde AG said Sunday it has agreed to pay $4,60 billion to Lincare Holdings Inc., a Florida-based provider of oxygen and respiratory therapy services to patients at home.

The deal is the latest sign of raids that industrial gas suppliers are doing homecare sector, which is growing 6 to 9 percent a year, driven primarily by cost cuts at hospital operators and an aging population.

In his annual report 2011, Lincare, which serves more than 800,000 customers in the United States and in Canada, estimates that the total u.s. home respiratory market represented about $ 6 billion in annual revenue.

This appeal to Linde, who said in a statement on Sunday that it had signed a merger agreement with Lincare based on a cash offer of $41,50 per share, a premium of 22 percent, as shares ended trading at Lincare $ 34.02 on Friday.

Accutane Update – Or How An Acne Problem Has Now Made Me a Vegan….

When I cruised on the Disney Fantasy back in March, I was completely and totally exhausted.  While my fellow Traveling Moms went to shows and hung out at the various clubs on board, I sat in bed watching Shark Tank and going to bed early.  I mentioned the exhaustion to my dermatologist but she wasn’t too concerned.

Until my blood work came back with high liver enzymes.  I was immediately taken off of Accutane for two weeks, and I found that the exhaustion lifted as soon as I stopped taking the pills.  I returned to the doctor this morning to find that my liver enzymes had returned to normal.

And then, she mentioned my cholesterol.  I’ve always had high cholesterol, and both of my parents and my sister have high cholesterol also.  Accutane also makes cholesterol rise.

“What are you eating?”, she asked, in a somewhat judgmental tone.  “Chicken, fish, fruit, rice…..”, I replied…. someone defensively.  I felt obese, overweight, unhealthy, and gross – in addition to having bad acne.

Then she put me on a vegan diet.  Vegan… as in no meat.  No fish. No cheese. No milk in my coffee.  How in the world do I eat vegan?  Any tips?
