Do you use Google+ hangouts for your marketing?

Are you wondering how hangouts can help your business?

To learn how to get started with Google+ hangouts, I interview Brandee Sweesy for this episode of the Social Media Marketing podcast.

Social Media Marketing Podcast w/ Michael Stelzner

The Social Media Marketing podcast is a show from Social Media Examiner.

It’s designed to help busy marketers and business owners discover what works with social media marketing.

The show format is on-demand talk radio (also known as podcasting).

In this episode, I interview Brandee Sweesy, who is a Google+ hangouts marketing expert. For the last 20 years she has been helping entrepreneurs grow a following with video.

Brandee shares how you can use hangouts to promote your content.

You’ll learn the different techniques to help brand your hangouts and the best ways to promote attendance.

Share your feedback, read the show notes and get the links mentioned in this episode below!

Here are some of the things you’ll discover in this show:

What is a Google+ hangout?

Brandee states that first of all, it’s free. Google describes it as a unification of their video, chats and messenger service all in one place. It was a replacement for Google talk and Google chat.

Hangouts can either be private or you can stream live to your YouTube channel with Hangouts on Air.

brandee sweesy Brandee Sweesy's YouTube channel.

Brandee explains that if you’re a consultant or coach, you can use hangouts like you would Skype. The quality of the video is amazing.

If you want to record your private hangout sessions, then you will have to use Camtasia or ScreenFlow. These hangouts are great to use for team meetings, consulting, coaching or when you privately advise people.

With a hangout on air, you can host yourself and up to nine other people. You can all be on the video at the same time, where you can chat and give a presentation. This can be done with private hangouts and hangouts on air.

You’ll discover why you need to keep control of the sound-activated screen and what you need to do.

hangouts film strip You can control who is in the larger screen.

Hangouts on air stream live to your YouTube channel. It’s linked to your Google+ page. If you have a Google+ profile or a Google+ business page, you link it to your YouTube channel.

You need to have your YouTube channel verified for uploads of more than 15 minutes and most hangouts run longer than that.

The great advantage when you stream live to your YouTube channel is that at the end of the broadcast, you have unlimited YouTube content. You’ll find out what you need to add once you have finished the live stream to be able to optimize your video marketing.

When you stream live, it also runs on your Google+ profile page at the same time. Once you start a hangout on air, you can take the embed codes and share them on a Facebook tab, website or blog post. You can then direct people to watch it there.

brandee sweesy we are live Share the embed code on Facebook to announce that you are live on air.

There’s also a Hangouts on Air page that lists all of the hangouts that are currently on air.

Listen to the show to learn about how you should name your hangouts to grab people’s attention.

How does a hangout differ from a webinar?

Brandee first saw hangouts as a possible replacement for webinars. A lot of the webinar platforms are expensive and if you only do a few, it can be hard to justify the cost. Many webinar platforms base their price on the number of viewers. But with a hangout on air, you have unlimited viewership.

Brandee explains how she has done webinars by herself with a slide presentation embedded on a website that has unlimited viewers.

With hangouts on air, you don’t need to buy expensive plugins for your website. People can enter their email address and then flip over to a Watch Live page.

brandee sweesy watch live page You can have people opt in on your website and then flip through to your Watch Live page.

You’ll discover the best option to help build engagement and keep viewers from getting distracted. The advantage with hangouts is you have the opportunity to share an image with your audience, plus have that face-to-face connection, all in one place.

You can share content with both private hangouts and hangouts on air. All you have to do is press the Screen Share button. Brandee’s trick is to never share your desktop screen. Always make sure you close everything down first, except for what you want to share.

If you use Keynote, you need to convert your slides into PowerPoint, then load them into your Google Drive and select Present in New Window. You’ll also learn how you can build your slides in Google Drive and Brandee’s secret trick.

Listen to the show to find out how to control the main video and swap among guests.

Why marketers should consider doing a hangout

Brandee says the number-one reason is because it’s YouTube. Videos always rank higher in searches and hangouts on air jump very quickly to the first page of Google.

With normal video, you have to go through and edit it before it is released; whereas with hangouts on air, you have the live streaming to YouTube. This gives you unlimited YouTube content. If you are strategic with the optimization afterwards, you will skyrocket to the first page on your subject.

Remember that people buy from people they know, like and trust. It’s a huge opportunity to allow people to get to know you face to face. You’ll hear what people can gain from these live experiences.

Brandee has had clients who have made $12,000 with one hangout on air alone. You can also create web shows, which help build your list and engagement with your audience. People love it when you mention them live on air. When you have a weekly show at a certain time and are consistent with the people you interview, it’s a great benefit to your business.

You’ll discover how the analytics work for live streaming and what made Brandee’s viewers double in 24 hours.

If you want to share exclusive content, the best option is to go back into the video once the broadcast has ended and mark it as unlisted. This allows you to share your exclusive content with only the people who registered to watch it. Once you mark it as unlisted, it’s pulled out of your YouTube channel. You’ll also learn another way to share exclusive content.

Brandee shares what equipment she uses for her videos and why there is zero labor involved.

Listen to the show to find out about what you need to learn first before you start to record and what Brandee tests before she starts a broadcast.

What kind of apps can enhance hangouts?

One of Brandee’s favorite apps is the Hangout Toolbox. It allows you to have a lower third, where you can put your name and your website address.

hangouts toolbox in use You can brand your video in the lower third with your name and website address.

Even if it’s a hangout with others, you still need to have your name, website address and a call to action there.

You can also use your logo in the same area. The Hangouts Toolbox has custom overlays, so you can make sure you have a well-branded lower third. It’s great for consistency and branding. It helps with when you are on other shows too.

Listen to the show to find out what size the lower third needs to be.

What you need to know if you are getting started with hangouts

Brandee states that you first need to know the answer to “What is your why?” Once you understand this, the next stage is your strategy, which includes where you want people to watch your hangouts.

If you’re a video person, you’ll want to send viewers to your YouTube channel. For a marketing person who wants to build a list, then the best place to send them to is your website and ask for an opt-in. It all depends on where your biggest audience is.

As with all marketing, it’s about consistency. If your goal is to build relationships and engage your audience, then you might want to do a weekly show. If you want to sell a product, it won’t be as often but you will become known for this through your hangouts. It’s another marketing tool.

You’ll hear about two guys who co-host Social Media Maniacs and how within a couple of weeks they went from zero subscribers to thousands.

Although hangouts can be any length, the ideal time is around 30-45 minutes. It only works for longer periods if it’s high-energy and moves forward.

Brandee talks about viewer engagement and what you need to take into account when you ask questions.

brandee sweesy post comments Get viewer engagement with an attention-grabbing promotion.

People love it when you include them in a hangout. Make sure you prompt for questions. The Hangout Toolbox and Comment Tracker will let you pull comments in from your YouTube channel, your Google+ profile and your Twitter account. You can then pop these on the screen.

Listen to the show to find out the best way to include comments if the hangout is on your blog.

How to promote a hangout

First you need to decide what your goal is and where you want to send people. It’s the number-one consistency in your marketing. Brandee firmly believes that you should go where your audience is. Never try to drag them to another place. You need to make it as easy as possible for your end users.

You’ll discover what promotional pieces work best and what you need to include to help drive people to one location.

If people happen upon you on the Hangout on Air page or on your YouTube channel, then these are bonus people.

When you promote your live event, you need to start 4 days in advance. Brandee uses a plugin for her website, so when you land, you need to fill in your email. Then instead of a double opt-in, it takes you through to the Watch Live page.

Brandee shares how she gathers questions for the show and what techniques she uses to remind people of the live hangout.

go live hangout You need to keep promoting right up until the last minute before you go live.

About 30 minutes before you start your hangout on air, Brandee advises to start setting up and making sure the lighting and camera angle are in a good position.

Then 15 minutes before you start, you need to invite your guest to come and join you in the “green room.”

You only start to stream live once you click Start Broadcast. You’ll hear how Brandee does one last promotion 5 minutes before the hangout starts.

Once the broadcast has finished, the video is available within a couple of minutes in your YouTube Video Manager. You now have the opportunity to add the description, keywords or even edit the video.

Brandee shares how to make a trailer for your longer broadcasts and where to add annotations.

Listen to the show to hear what Brandee trims off her video.

If you find yourself staring at your screen too long, then a cool tool to check out is f.lux. You can install it on your computer and iPhone/iPad.

It coordinates the time of day with the brightness of your screen. As you approach the nighttime, it takes the blue out of the screen and replaces it with red. It’s a great option, as it doesn’t make the screen so bright if you want to check something when it’s dark out.

Google AdSense?

Let's take a look at a few years back, you were very similar to other types of advertising media is done in such a way that the Internet, like television, or in fact, in the newspaper and more like to see.

When you enter the site and you will get to see the banners at any position (often these are quite a few very large) to submit, in which companies pay for advertising space for added.

However, one problem with this kind of advertising had been confirmed. It's really the fact that has not been exploited, he adds, some at the paper, but instead it was announced via the Internet.

You probably have navigated through the pages I've found lots of things like this. Are you looking for a online shop and looking at the clock, but you get a banner to advertise the car.

While you could buy a car, some later point in time, and now I want to looking for and watch it if you have a banner with certainty because the clock, advertising will probably click on it.

Well, it's also your thoughts on Google, so they came up with the idea of a killer. This is known as the targeted advertising program, Google AdSense, and known as

How to (Web Designer/website owners), instead of your visitors don't care about a few banners on your site to get the basketball's just jumping over some of the area assigned.

You then sign up for the Google AdSense program and your Web pages and insert a small piece of code to specify the location, banners, Google sites will receive additional related to the contents of the present guarantee.

Google search engine company to carry out this task, because it is very easy for Google. It is the key word in your page, whatever your page and presto you will find things that are related to the website's database search: targeted advertising.

You (the webmaster) of your site, click an adsense banner on the fees for each visitor you get. Now it is happening more often then a traditional banner, along with the people who actually care about those banners are bound because of the (otherwise, they will have them on your page not?).

However, this also does wonders for those who want to. And for the same reason. The biggest thing about Google AdSense, banners, all of the content is relevant.

This relevance, program success and also why the reason to keep everyone happy is key. Posted in advertising, the advertiser will be associated with a Publisher to take their content to Google your own share of the money.

Of course, as always, Google, in terms of looks and features with its AdSense program has set some high standards for. On your website, you will not be able to have more than one such banner and insert the text in the banner only Google.

So the added benefit is that regular AdSense ads are much less obtrusive advertising. However, this also means it is possible to position the banner more because he might miss it all visitors.

So in the end, Google AdSense ads related to content on the site is unique because it is an advertising program. Anyone who wants to advertise and pay for it in Google. To advertise on their site and has nothing to do with AdSense in the process of getting paid by Google through.

All transactions are run through Google and advertisers and publishers to understand and review the effectiveness of their campaigns which will help you get access to the statistics.

The whole process is elegant, simple and anyone in the chain on the advertiser site visitors in an effective and their innovation and new thinking are known to Google for one reason.

Why use Google AdSense?

Without a doubt, heard about Google AdSense and thought about giving it up. But it's really worth placing an adsense banner on your site?

The answer is a definite yes, always on your site and a few others could have a banner or some search affiliate advertising program, and probably is, of course, a healthy amount of visitors to your site will make money is a given. However, with affiliate marketing, it is the return on your website before your visitors will complete the sale.

But nowhere close to what you get from using AdSense. Using AdSense a year and earn in excess of 100.000 per dollar. And it doesn't stop with just making more money. First of all, the ads are text-only. They're your visitors then your average means much less obtrusive banners designed to catch the eye of visitors.

Of course, they can be found better placement, but nevertheless, they don't bother to check a lot of traditional advertising to viewers. You can use the pop-up banners I've seen many sites that has a floating visitor each time you visit a website, there will be a lot of screaming in anger to another schema. Actually you can do better then, annoying people less and still make the amount of money.

Second, depending on the content of your site and advertising will be generated automatically. If you are using an affiliate advertising program on your site, you must specify the specific category they belong to.

However, if your site falls in this category, out of any page, the banner will not be subject to any more. And what that means is that potentially can lead to its inefficiency and who are interested in them, I'm showing ads to people who do not have.

Never just happens to Google AdSense: advertise on your site will be in sync with what your visitors are interested in your site's value-add revenue generating.

What's more, the sight of their size, custom banners, and they are unlike the traditional approach, the overall visual quality to your site and increase your site content, you will feel the rest of the integration.

A lot of people looking for someone to advertise on their site is a big problem. AdSense today clearly is an easy solution that can be used for this problem.

Sign up for free and almost all the AdSense program takes time. AdWords is a great potential of websites in the database, and then nothing more than 150.000 users number, which can be caused from a competitor. In other words, the more people will compete against CPC or cost per click for search terms not to rise inevitably.

In addition, the wind is your site for AdSense and you can complete the entire process in time. It is any form of affiliate advertising has yet another reason to choose how easy AdSense then takes a lot less to do.

Copy (other then the registration program) to add a banner to your website, you can simply paste the AdSense a few lines and you are all done, you & banner moving, they are how big and how they integrate with the rest of your site you can choose from.

The usefulness of your site with ads killer scheme level to draw a line between because I want some webmaster out there,. For some people, others just adsense pays for hosting of their website will continue to run while the money is badly needed.

A lot to think a good Adsense advertising program because it "just work for everyone" went into making it. It's that people use AdWords for using AdSense for webmasters, the most important thing is that visitors to the Web site for the great work.

German Publishers Can't Wean Themselves Off Google News, Despite Winning Copyright Law Change

German Publishers Can't Wean Themselves Off Google News, Despite Winning Copyright Law Change

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
Germany’s new copyright law comes into force today but several major German publishers haven’t rushed to pull their news snippets from Google News, despite lobbying in favour of tightening the law. On the contrary, they have opted in to carry on having their snippets displayed. Call it a love/hate relationship, where ‘love’ refers to the traffic generated by click-throughs from Google News and ‘hate’ to the sense of indignation that Google gets to cream off news content and use it to power its own aggregator service.
German publishers including Axel Springer – whose publications include the newspapers Die Welt and Bild – had lobbied for German copyright law to be extended to cover the snippets of stories Google displays in its News service. They also lobbied for search engines to pay publishers to display these news snippets. But it’s one of several big German publishers that have apparently opted in to Google News.
A screengrab of today’s Google News German homepage shows several Die Welt stories in prominent positions:
Google News Germany
Ahead of the new law force, coming into Google changed how  Google News operates in Germany, making it an opt-in service, rather than the current default opt-out in all other markets where it operates a local Google News service.

Google: That Mozilla Penalty Only Impacted One Page Out Of 22 Million

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

mozillaWe reported yesterday that Google penalized Mozilla over user generated content. Today we learn that it was a really really small penalty that only impacted a single page out of Mozilla’s ~22 million web pages.

Google’s head of search spam, Matt Cutts, added more to the Google thread explaining that this manual penalty was applied in a very granular way. In fact, it only impacted a single page on Mozilla’s domain name, blog.mozilla.org/respindola/about.

Matt Cutts wrote:

In this particular case, it was the url http://blog.mozilla.org/respindola/about/ that we took action on, and that was because it was so defaced with spam comments. I checked the URL this morning and it was over 12 megabytes (!) of spam from 21,169 different comments. When a page like that lands in our search results, it’s the sort of thing that users complain to us about, so we are willing to take action.

Besides for that being an incredible number of spammy comments on a single page, it is upsetting to see how confused Mozilla’s webmaster was over Google’s penalty notification. Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Google getting more detailed in their Webmaster Tools penalty notifications. But as you can see from our coverage of the penalty and Mozilla’s questions about the penalty, it appeared that this was a little larger than just impacting a single page on this massive site.

This is a similar situation for when the BBC was penalized and it turned out to be a penalty on one page.

From 3rd Party To 1st Party: The Evolution Of The Google Advertising Toolset

A year ago, I was firmly anti-Google. Not in the sense that I disliked Google — I just felt that Google did not provide the best tools in the business to analyze and make decisions on their own advertising placements.

When asked if an advertiser should consider a 3rd party technology to help manage ad spend, I would undoubtedly say “yes” because Google Analytics, AdWords, and Merchant Center were (and remain) imperfectly bound systems requiring a lot of proprietary work to merge and make informed decisions.

Much has changed in the last year. Google has made some significant changes (PLA, rules-based and improved algorithmic bidding, attribution modeling, enhanced campaigns…), making it increasingly difficult to leverage third party tools to gain an advantage over free tools like AdWords and Google Analytics. Having been on the inside at a technology house and heavily involved in marketing third party technologies, this is a difficult reality to embrace.

I’m going to go through the historical pros and present realities of 3rd party paid search technology platforms versus their free ad server counterparts (AdWords, Bing Ads, and Google Analytics). For the record, I have no personal bias toward or against particular technologies and all statements below are generalized toward the entire industry.

One of the most blatant shortcomings in the Google tracking ecosystem has always been conversion tracking — AdWords conversion events and Analytics goals/e-commerce tracking.

AdWords Tracking Setup AdWords Tracking Setup

The inability to create composite tracking events, parse conversions event types for bidding, or modify conversion data after the fact can be frustrating if you depend on AdWords or Google Analytics as the only means of tracking conversions for your marketing program.

Google Analytics Goal Setup Google Analytics Goal Setup

Third-party providers have stepped in to provide comprehensive and flexible tracking systems with deep integration capabilities. But, while it sounds nice in a pitch, complex tracking integrations are only relevant if you have complex tracking demands. Some businesses require complex tracking solutions such as composite metrics or latent conversion attribution; however, the reality is that most advertisers have simple advertising tracking demands – either a CPA (cost-per-acquisition) or ROI (return-on-investment).

AdWords, Bing Ads and GA all do a very good job with CPA and ROI. And, with a little legwork and a half-decent internal database, most tracking needs can be distilled down to a CPA: the average net present value of a conversion.

CPA Calculation

Building on the relevance of simple tracking demands, at face value, AdWords offers a fairly similar tool set compared to even the most flexible 3rd party platforms:

AdWords Manual CPC BiddingRules based biddingAlgorithmic rank based biddingAlgorithmic CPA based bidding3rd Party Software Manual CPC BiddingRules based biddingAlgorithmic rank based biddingAlgorithmic CPA based biddingAlgorithmic ROI based bidding

Without any additional analysis, the only way to manage to a performance metric in AdWords that’s not CPA is via rules — an option that has been around for years and refined via 3rd party tools, but only a recent addition for AdWords.

As previously mentioned, any revenue-based metric can be distilled down to a CPA, and as the ad server, Google has a massive advantage over any other algorithmic bid management provider.

Consider the number of variables a 3rd party system can leverage for bidding in AdWords: in the enhanced campaign environment there are 2 bids per keyword (Computer/Tablet & Mobile). If the platform is robust, it may offer up to 8 day-parts, making 16 possible bids per day per keyword.

On the other hand, AdWords conversion optimizer can manipulate bids for all three devices, across both Google.com and search partner networks per unique impression. That’s several orders of magnitude of variance in possible bids per day!

The most common argument against conversion optimizer is that it’s a black box – but so are 3rd party platform algorithms. The inherent advantage of the ad server is too much to ignore.

Prior to Enhanced campaigns, marketers had a clear incentive to segment campaigns by as many values as possible to best understand unique click and conversion behaviors by device, network, etc. Take a comprehensive account with 50 campaigns and break it apart by three devices (computer, tablet, mobile) and three operating systems (windows, mac/iOS and others), and you’ve got a 450-campaign behemoth that’s borderline unmanageable due to size constraints.

Accounts that get too big become extraordinarily difficult to manage and manipulate as even the simplest tasks require mind-numbing repetition leading to human error.

As a result, 3rd party platforms are built around automated processes and scripted bulk changes evolved to bear the burden of repetition.

For better or for worse, Enhanced Campaigns force marketers to reduce that load back down to, in my previous example, 50 campaigns – effectively negating the benefits provided by the 3rd party tool sets designed to streamline bulk processes.

With all this talk about AdWords, we can’t forget about Bing Ads. A fleshed out Bing Ads account can make up 15-25% of overall volume in a paid search effort, so it’s nothing to scoff at. While Bing Ads lacks the same feature-rich design of AdWords, it does offer a very capable on- and offline editor. With a little elbow grease and offline analysis, AdWords bidding practices can be incorporated into Bing Ads.

With no proprietary bidding technology, we cannot rely on an algorithmic conversion optimizer to set bids for us in Bing. Fortunately, the very same tool we use to identify goal CPAs can be modified to calculate goal CPCs.

Consider the following known formulas:

CPA = Cost / ConversionCPC = Cost / ClickConversion = Conv Rate x Clicks

Doing some quick substitution:

CPA = Cost / (Clicks x Conv Rate)CPA x Clicks x Conv Rate = CostCost / Clicks = CPA x Conv RateCPC = CPA x Conv Rate

So, we can take calculated goal CPA (net present value AOV) multiplied by conversion rate to identify a goal CPC at a keyword level.

CPC & CPC calculation

Third-party software solutions exist to fill in the gaps where proprietary software falls short. For many years now, tools like Marin Software, Kenshoo, Adobe Omniture, and countless others have delivered enterprise-level tool sets designed to make up for shortcomings in the AdWords and Google Analytics tracking and management systems.

But, with the bevy of recent updates and changes, these platforms are struggling to maintain the edge that has made the search technology industry relevant. Keeping up with AdWords/GA has become the primary objective. Google is laying down the challenge to yet another industry: add value or move on.

Opinions expressed in the article are those of the guest author and not necessarily Search Engine Land.

Google Adds Non-Profit Details To Knowledge Graph

Semantic Search & Knowledge Graph: Information Architecture & Website StructureGoogle announced on Google+ that the Knowledge Graph now supports searches for non-profit organizations.

Now, when you search for some non-profits by name on Google, Google will show on the right hand side, in the Knowledge graph box the nonprofit’s financials, cause, assets, tax ID, tax code, recent Google+ posts and more.

This seems to only currently work for non-profits with Google+ pages. So if you do the marketing for a non-profit, it may be wise to create a Google+ page for them.

Here is an example of a search for [donors choose]:

google-knowledge-graph-non-profit

The information that is shown in the knowledge graph includes the number of followers on Google+, Wikipedia description, logo & link to Google+, tax ID number, founded date, tax deductibility code, nonprofit category, assets, revenue, income and the founders.

Is Google Abusing Its Market Power? Former Legal Allies Disagree

AppId is over the quota AppId is over the quota Exhibit A: In the spring of 1998, the federal government and 20 states filed a landmark antitrust suit against Microsoft. A few months later, Google was founded.

Now Google is the subject of major antitrust investigations in the United States and Europe. In the United States, regulators are expected to announce a decision within days to sue or settle, and under what terms. The European decision will come soon as well.
Much has changed over the years, but two lawyers who helped build the case against Microsoft are playing important roles once again. But this time, Gary L. Reback and Susan A. Creighton are on opposite sides.
The two lawyers, and the positions they have taken, point to some striking similarities yet also significant differences between the two high-stakes investigations — and why the pursuit of Google has proved challenging for antitrust officials.
In 1996, Mr. Reback and Ms. Creighton were partners, representing Netscape, the pioneering Web browser company. They wrote a 222-page “white paper,” laying out Microsoft’s campaign to use its dominance of personal computer software to stifle competition from Netscape, the Internet insurgent. After Netscape sent their report to the Justice Department, the head of the antitrust division ordered an investigation.
Mr. Reback is now an attorney at Carr & Ferrell in Silicon Valley, where he represents several companies that have complained to the government about Google. He does not represent Microsoft, though that company is a born-again champion of antitrust action, against its rival Google.
In Google, Mr. Reback sees a familiar pattern — a giant company trying to hinder competition and attack new markets. Google, he says, is unfairly using its dominant search engine to favor the company’s offerings in online shopping, travel and local listings and thus stifle competition from Web sites that rely on Google search for traffic.
“From my perspective, it’s an instant replay of the Microsoft case,” Mr. Reback said in a recent interview, though he would not comment for this article. “It’s the same playbook.”
Not to Ms. Creighton, a partner in the Washington office of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, who is in Google’s corner. She has testified before Congress on Google’s behalf and negotiated with the Federal Trade Commission, the agency conducting the antitrust investigation, and where she was a senior official during the Bush administration.
“Google’s conduct is pro-competitive,” Ms. Creighton declared in her Senate testimony last year. “Far from threatening competition, Google has consistently enhanced consumer welfare by increasing the services available to consumers.”
Ms. Creighton hits two main themes in Google’s defense. The first is the consumer benefit of all Google’s free services. The second is that the cost to consumers of switching to Internet alternatives like Microsoft’s Bing search engine, the Expedia travel site or Yelp local listings is “zero,” she said. Or, as Google repeatedly says, competition is “just a click away.”
In the late 1990s, Microsoft had its version of both arguments. Microsoft bundled a free Web browser into its Windows operating system — an added feature at no cost, surely a consumer benefit. In its trial testimony, Microsoft showed that millions of people had downloaded the competing Netscape browser onto Windows — a rival product just a double-click away.
But in the trial, the evidence taken as a whole portrayed a wide-ranging effort by Microsoft to crush Netscape. It is not an antitrust violation for a powerful company to gain a dominant share of one market and then expand into other markets. The legal issue is the tactics the dominant company employs to expand its empire.
