Live @ SMX London: Facebook’s New Graph Search & Its Marketing Implications

smx_uk_spotlight

In January, Facebook unveiled it’s first major move into the search space: Facebook Graph Search. Graph Search is not just another index of the web, however. Rather, it’s powered by what people are liking and sharing, leading to vastly different results than you’d see on Google. And while it’s not currently a direct threat to Google, the writing is on the wall, so to speak: Graph Search is poised to change the very fundamentals of SEO, and socially-informed search and content marketing.

Graph Search is currently being rolled out as a small private beta, but over time all billion-plus users will likely be using it on an almost daily basis. In other words, it’s important, and something all online marketers should start thinking about – now, before your competitors do.

That’s why we’ve asked a group of search marketing experts with hands-on experience with Graph Search to share their insights and practical knowledge during the Facebook’s New Graph Search & Its Marketing Implications session at SMX London. Our panelists will take a deep dive into Graph Search, discussing how Graph Search is unique, how it will change SEO, and the opportunities and challenges it’s likely to present for advertisers and marketers.

Facebook’s New Graph Search & Its Marketing Implications is just one of more than two-dozen info-packed sessions on May 15-16 in Chelsea – check out the agenda for SMX London and register now!

Looking forward to seeing you in London!

The Holy Grail of Internet Marketing: Owning the Whole SERP

The Holy Grail of Internet Marketing Photo from drp.
Used under Creative Commons license.

In many ways, taking charge of your search engine results page is like answering the age-old philosophical question, “Who am I” — but for your business. You may still be in the dark about what motivates some of your personal actions, but if you’re a business owner, I’m pretty certain you know exactly what your business is all about. That’s the first step. Now you need to translate that into Google results. Sound easy? Didn’t think so. It’s a bit like trying to reel in Nessy with a  Pocket Fisherman. But all hope is not lost. You can – and should — take ownership of your SERP (Search Engine Results Page), and there are more ways than ever to do just that.

Integrated search has been a thorny issue for marketers since it came out, and the issue is only getting pricklier.  Local maps, the Knowledge Graph, one-boxes scraped from Wikipedia, and the various tools Google provides based on user searches have combined with ever-increasing screen real estate for paid advertising. The results are often chaotic, and have left some siding with Microsoft’s FairSearch rallying cry of “anti-competitive.” Certainly, online marketing on Google is getting more complex and difficult, but even a part-time marketer such as an SMB owner can use paid, organic, and social techniques to reach the zenith of comprehensive search engine marketing: showing in each of the parts of Google’s SERPs.

For the part-time marketer who is not focused on a number-one rank for every relevant keyword, the biggest goal is to allow a brand-aware user to find the business’s official site by name. Verifying word-of-mouth with anonymous reviews, strengthening the deeper pages on the site, and surfacing real news about the business are all important to ensuring that a new brand-aware customer comes in the door. own the whole branded serp

Branded AdWords Campaign

The first step for any small business to clearly own the SERP is to start a branded AdWords campaign. By tightly controlling keyword choice with exact and phrase match types, a marketer keeps costs low, avoids brand squatters without filing for a trademark, and strengthens the brand’s appearance on the Google SERP.

It may seem crazy to pay for clicks to your site, especially if your site shows up in the first position organically, but the data shows that having both the first and “zeroth” positions increases clicks by up to 89%. Furthermore, by using phrase and exact match in your keyword set, you limit your ad from showing on less-related keywords, keeping your cost-per-clicks low and manageable. Finally, the naturally high quality score the ad will have for the brand name allows a wide variety of ad extensions to show, expanding both the size and the trust factor of the ad.

Branded Organic Results

Slightly more difficult than showing ads for your brand is to ensure your site shows prominently in organic rankings. While domain name plays a role, the stronger signals come from, as you might expect, links. The easiest way to do this without trying is to get links from news sources and local blogs by doing newsworthy things as a business. Short of getting natural links, posting press releases about truly meaningful company news can be picked up by news sources; and there’s no worry about PR links not working, as was preemptively reported by some outlets.

As important to organic’s role in owning the results pages is managing how the site’s snippet shows. Promoting and demoting sitelinks via webmaster tools allows branded searchers to find deeper, more meaningful pages on the site without refining their search. Authorship provides a face to the name, increasing trust compared to a blank set of search results. Review pages with Schema or hReview markup show that your existing customers love you, and other semantic markup like breadcrumbs makes the content on the page clear before your analytics platform show a bounce.

Google+ & Local Optimization

Authorship has been mentioned before, but Google+ pages have become so much more than a Facebook competitor. By merging Google+ with Local results, it’s become imperative that a marketer set up a Google+ page. Reviews, both on and off Google, +1s by friends, and accurate hours provide a wide variety of information that shows in the Knowledge Graph area above any poorer ads that might be running on your brand name. Linking your Google+ to your site with rel=publisher allows you to combine whatever +1s come to your site with your Google+

But Google+ isn’t a cure-all. Expanding a consistent business profile to Yelp and other, more mundane business directories helps ensure that your Maps listing is strong in its own right, and provides more owned and “rented” content to show for your brand search. Keeping a strong and consistent local presence also helps with the real Holy Grail: non-branded SERP domination.

Convincingly showing up on Google for your own brand name is great, and honestly not too difficult, but there is yet one more major hurdle for the intrepid internet marketer: non-branded search. Getting all these things right is hard enough, but to have to compete with others who have a reasonable reason to show for a given keyword forces you to take all the lessons from brand-level marketing and push it to the limit. The too-short answer is to turn your branded marketing efforts up to 11 while simultaneously shifting gears to target more general terms. own your unbranded seep Non-branded AdWords requires a well-optimized campaign, a manageable level of competition in your area, and a relevant landing page that ensures high quality scores and comparably low costs-per-click. Again, judicious use of match types can keep the budget-focused marketer from wasting an entire day’s budget on one click.

Consider reaching out for descriptive anchor text, often found in appositives, instead of linking your brand name to help your organic search visibility. The same strategies of outreach and re-publishable content creation will allow your business to reach for the stars in organic search.

Finally, making your social and local efforts relevant to unbranded search queries is the final straw to break Google’s back. Accurately categorizing your business on Google+ Local and Facebook provides on-page factors that make it more likely to show up in SERPs. Likewise, review sites such as Yelp or DealerRater are further strengthened by the natural location and keyword data provided in organic reviews; these, when strengthened by links from your site and others, have a high chance of showing up for “money” keywords.

The trick for the non-branded ranking domination is to scale your content and linking in a way that focuses not on your business name, but on your business’s services — a logical move to pull in customers who don’t know of your business’s existence. Using “rented” space on other platforms allows you to have a variety of domains showing in the ranking pages that funnels new business to your website.

Owning the SERP is a far-reaching goal for most SEO campaigns, but a little bit of work can assure your business is considered by Google to be the answer to a keyword query. With a well-managed strategy, a business can dominate search results, letting all roads lead to the Rome of your site.

Six Video Marketing Tips that Drive Traffic Cost Effectively

Let’s be honest; driving traffic to your site is not easy; it takes lots of time and effort to get good traffic that can be monetized effectively.

However; we have found that right now (we expect this to change) using video content to drive traffic is comparatively less work, and lower cost than using textual based content – this is simply because less people are creating video content.

This post will take you through some methods of getting traffic to your site using video content. We will not be covering the production process here. If you have never done video production before and are intimidated by the prospect then you can head over to the My Web Presenters video marketing blog for ideas and support after reading this post.

If you use PPC to drive traffic then you will be aware that making a profit is not easy as markets are pretty saturated on most keywords. However; this is not yet the case with video content. You will find that using promoted videos in Youtube gets you clicks more cost effectively than bidding on the same keywords in Adwords.

Yes, the functionality is different; you pay per view on Youtube promoted videos nowadays (they are part of the True View family now) so need to ensure that your call to action works in order to get the viewer to your site; but we have found that if your content is pretty good (does not need to be excellent) then this can be a more cost effective method of traffic generation.

Here is the intro video on using Adwords to promote your video content.

Aside from using Adwords there are many simple things that you can do to make your video content more visible within Youtube.

Be sure to include your website URL in your YouTube video description. At the top of your description is the best place. Make sure you include the ‘http://’ as this makes your URL appear as a clickable link.

Have a slide (or two) in your video displaying your URL: within your video you can include a slide which gives the viewer the URL of your home page or a specific product page – whatever is most appropriate for your purpose.

Use annotations to display your URL & calls to action: YouTube have an annotations feature which allows you to add interactive elements to your videos on YouTube, after you have uploaded them. One of the main issues people have with this feature is that it doesn’t allow you to create clickable links to URL’s outside of YouTube. However, it does allow you to create clickable links to other YouTube videos. You can also use annotations to display your URL and to encourage viewers to visit your website after watching your video.

This video shows you the different ways that you can use annotations in YouTube:

As you can see, there is lots of potential to use annotations in different ways. It is an opportunity to use calls to action to encourage users to subscribe to your YouTube channel.

Top Tip: LinkedTube does allow you to add clickable links to your YouTube videos.

Oneload is an online video distribution website that enables users to upload videos to multiple platforms at once. So, rather than uploading your videos one by one to all of your social media and video sharing sites, Oneload will save you time and do it for you.

Oneload includes a useful analytics tool which can tell you how many times your video has been viewed on each of the platforms you have uploaded it to. This will enable you to understand which platforms are having the best results for your videos and should inform your future video marketing strategy.

By sharing videos quickly to multiple platforms you will get quick traffic to your website – if you have made it obvious to viewers how they should get there (i.e. include your URL in your video – see point 1!).

Similar in principle to guest posting – you want others to help you promote your content.

Strategic collaborations could really give your video that extra needed marketing boost. If you work with the right people you may gain some influential marketing weight for your video.

a) Interview well known people in the industry: As well as meaning you are producing attractive and relevant content, this will also mean you will get some good quality links back to your own website.

b)  Work with other organizations to produce videos: Collaborations are a great way to build relationships and positive reciprocal relationships are likely to yield good results. A collaboration means you are doubling your creative potential and of course, your marketing potential. You will be reaching two core audiences instead of one.

Do not make the mistake of treating your videos as stand alone marketing elements. Uploading them to YouTube and leaving them there for people to find is not enough. Use social media sharing tools to push your video content out to as much of an audience as you possibly can.

Facebook, Twitter, MySpaceTV, Vimeo, Google Video, Revver and all of the others out there are worth sharing with to reach as big an audience as possible.

If you do not yet have a social network strategy for traffic then I suggest that you get started asap as this really can be a fantastic way to drive traffic – you need to build relationships with like minded people and to promote each others content – as if you were in a tribe or a team.

You need people to be able to find your video in the first place – before you use the video as a way to draw people to your website! The best starting point is to know what keywords your target market are searching and then optimise your videos with the keywords that they are using.

Use keywords in your video title, description and tags. Make sure that you actually use tags on your videos! Use captions/subtitles because these are searchable by search engines and will be rich in keywords that are scattered throughout the content of your video. When a video appears in search engine results it is a far more attractive click option than pure text.

Youtube does have closed caption functionality where it auto-generates the subtitles for you – DO NOT rely on this; it is a good starting point but it is inaccurate to a similar degree as Google translate.

This guest post was written by Neil Davidson, who is the Founder of My Web Presenters, who are a leading Corporate Video Production specialist. They work with businesses of all sizes to create and market compelling and emotive video that helps them to communicate with their specific audience.

Marketing and politicize the menopause

The Associated Press reported this week the marketing of a new product line of menopause – "a line of products that target American women 50 million that are or will soon go through menopause. Prices between $ 9.99 and $ 7.99, the line includes lubricant for vaginal dryness, adhesives, socks and feminine cleaning air freshener to the odor and cooling gel roll-on and wipes for women have hot flashes. " Snippet:

Feminine washes are usually not recommended by many doctors, says Dr. Lauren f. Streicher, a gynecologist and Assistant professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Feinberg School of medicine in Chicago. And vaginal odor products that mask can cause people to not treat what is causing this symptom in the first place, she added.

"The idea to cover it with an air freshener is an inadequate approach," said Streicher. "I'm very happy people are paying attention, but I don't want to see people harnessed."

And USA Today reports:

But do we really need more products that suggest that women basically stink? The new "daily freshness" products — like all sprays, Douches and cleanser before them — can actually be harmful, doctors say.

"The vaginal odor is not a common symptom that patients come to physicians," or a problem that becomes more common during menopause, says Elisa Ross, an obstetrician/gynecologist at the Cleveland Clinic. When a woman realizes a unusual odor, she may have an infection, Ross says, "very few doctors recommend these products cleaning because they can mask the symptoms that should be brought to the attention of a doctor. They can also cause irritation if. "

Also this week, Liz Scherer, not your Mama Flashfree: menopause, wrote, "Politicizing menopause."   Read the whole post for yourself.  But I wanted to get two excerpts:

"It is possible that menopause has been Government overpoliticized, medicalizada and poorly characterized, a phenomenon not kidnapped by medicine as gradually occupied, [with] the authorities throughout the ages grimly trying and do not set your subject?" "" We are drowning in politics, medicine and industry. And it is difficult to discern the truth from fiction, the data from the data, the risk of benefit

Examples of medical marketing for the week: full body skin cancer scans, robotic hysterectomy

Both of these were sent to me by journalists:

An email pitch letter from a medical group:

Medical Office has First Full Body Scanner to Protect Against Skin Cancer

Dear xxxxx,

We thought that this might make for a very interesting and informative article. With the approach of summer break, this is a time when most people head outdoors. It’s important for people to remember to protect their families against one of the most common forms of cancer today: skin cancer. Current statistics show that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.

—- uses the latest technology to detect and protect against skin cancer. They are the only practice in central (could be any state) to offer this system which creates a digital map of the entire body.

Now let’s look at the evidence:  The US Preventive Services Task Force states that “the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of using a whole-body skin examination by a primary care clinician or patient skin self-examination for the early detection of cutaneous melanoma, basal cell cancer, or squamous cell skin cancer in the adult general population.”

The other example came from a journalist who wrote, “Doesn’t it seem particularly exploitative to use a 26-year-old woman’s hysterectomy for this?” The news release/pitch:

Surgeons at xxx Health Center have completed the first robot-assisted surgery in xxxx County.

The first patient was 26-year-old xxx, who underwent a robot-assisted hysterectomy April 13.

Hysterectomies and other gynecological procedures are the first of many robot-assisted surgical procedures that will be offered at xxx.

“We are proud to offer the most high-tech, minimally invasive treatment options available anywhere right here at xxx. Now our patients can benefit from the latest surgical technologies without leaving home,” says (the) president of xxx Health Center.

For advertising disguised as news, see this puff piece in the business section of The Tennessean online, “daVinci robot works miracles.”

Addendum 5 hours later:  The Nashville Scene website reports, “Tennessean Farms Out Health Section to Hospital Flacks.“  And Paul Raeburn of the Knight Science Journalism Tracker writes:

“The changes come as the Tennessean institutes a paywall for many of its stories. (Newspaper management) said that because of the paywall, “The Tennessean will continue its mission of serving Middle Tennesseans for years to come.”

With regard to some things, maybe. But not with regard to health news. The paper has already failed in that mission.”

Finally, for absurdity in robot hype, see a Seattle doc’s You Tube video of how he used a robotic surgical system to fold a paper airplane – and see how the blogger known as The Skeptical Scalpel grounds that hype.

Mike Dillard-Online Marketing Guru

If you have surfed the internet at all in the last decade is without a doubt have run through a gentleman named Mike Dillard. He is a well known internet marketer/trainer who is a master of self-promotion and branding.

I must say at the onset that doing this review by Mike Dillard, I found him will surely be a bit of an online marketing guru. I believe that he coined the phrase "attraction Marketing" and teaches this concept in one of his courses. Attraction marketing is in a nutshell, marketing yourself so that people are trying to or buy your products or joining your program. Instead of being the Hunter becomes the hunted. Although Mr. Dillard may have coined the phrase attraction marketing certainly is not a secret how to achieve this.

When you become a member of its program will receive some great bits of information. To get the "real good stuff" will be gently persuaded to purchase other programs to learn techniques and different marketing strategies. I should add that all of its training materials are worth every penny, obviously it is totally up to the individual to take the time to learn and apply the training.

If someone were to buy all the formation of Mike Dillard offered in his system and he had time to study it, they should at least learn a lot about how to make money online. Another option would be to work with a program that provides all the marketing training is included in one membership fee.

Generate an income on the Internet is a process you learn. Valuable information are available online through different training sites. The truth is that if you are willing and determined to learn, there is no doubt being who can succeed.
